When Should I Shred It?


From receipts to home deeds, let's talk about what you should shred and when.

Shred Immediately

  • Expired warranties

  • Credit offers

  • Cancelled checks (non-tax related)

  • Sales receipts

  • ATM receipts (you can also get these emailed to you!)

  • Paid credit card statements

  • Paid utility bills

Shred Within 1 Year

  • Bank statements

  • Pay stubs

  • Paid medical bills

Shred After 7 Years

  • Records for any tax deductions

  • W-2's

  • Tax-related receipts

  • Tax-related cancelled checks

Shred When No Longer Needed

  • Auto titles (keep as long as you own the vehicle)

  • Home improvement receipts (keep until you sell the home and pay any capital gains taxes)

  • Disputed medical bills (keep until resolved)

  • Home deeds (keep as long as you own the property)

Never Shred (never get rid of these!!)

  • Birth certificates

  • Death certificates

  • Social Security cards

  • Marriage/Divorce decrees

  • Tax returns

  • Adoption papers

  • Citizenship papers
