How to Start Your Own Home Recycling Program

Recycling is inconvenient. I don't have enough space in my home to recycle. Recycling doesn't make a difference so why do it? These are just a few of the most common misconceptions keeping people from recycling, but did you know that recycling really is easy and convenient once you get set up? Let's look at a few steps to get you started with your own home recycling program.

1. Decide what you are going to recycle: Are you initially going to start with paper, plastic, glass or will you start with all three? If you are worried about the convenience of recycling you may want to start with only one type of recyclable and then add on as you get your system in place.

2. Learn how you should sort your recyclables: Consult your city recycling program to learn how specific their program rules are. Some programs require that glass be separated by color whereas others do not require this.

3. Decide on a location for your recycling station: Consider how much space you have and if you want your recycling station to be out of site versus easily accessible? Once you find a space take measurements before purchasing your recycling bins.

4. Choose your recycling bins: You can purchase your bins based on functionality or style. If you are someone that enjoys DIY projects you can find several ideas on sites like Pinterest. This is also a great time to get your kids involved by letting them help build or design your bins.

Getting started may sound tedious, but just like most things, getting started is always the hardest part. Once you have a system in place and everyone is involved then you will see just how easy recycling is and you will feel good about doing your part to take care of our planet.
